The Autoimmunity Unit of Bart Roep is part of the Department of Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion at the University of Leiden. The Department contains four core facilities (peptide/protein chemistry; stem cell therapy; cellular immunology; immunogenetics; serology), as well as three service facilities (tissue typing lab, blood bank, cross-match lab). It has fully equipped T-cell and B-cell laboratories for culture, virus culture, immunochemistry, molecular biology, peptide and protein chemistry, genetics, genetically modified organisms, and mass spectrometry. The Department has accreditation of ASHI (American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics) and EFI (European Federation of Immunogenetics), and serves as Reference Laboratory for Eurotransplant, and national reference centre for histocompatibility. The Diabetes Team headed by Professor Roep focuses on investigating causes of type 1 diabetes, and to translate new knowledge into novel strategies for immunotherapeutic intervention in the disease process leading to type 1 diabetes.
