Karine Hellemans

Karine Hellemans is a MSc in Biology and has a PhD in Medical Sciences. She is Professor at Brussels Free University-VUB since 2006, coordinates since 2011 the multicenter program of the Diabetes Research Center in Brussels and is head of the coordination unit of the Center for Beta Cell Therapy in Diabetes. Over the past 13 years she has coordinated successful large center grants in beta cell therapy. She has a scientific background and expertise in ethical affairs and dissemination and exploitation of scientific results. The main task is to manage multicenter programs that are jointly undertaken by partner research institutions, clinical centers, reference centers, and small bio-industry enterprises. The coordination core has been responsible for the management of four European projects and two JDRF-funded (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) programs on protection and restoration of the beta cells.
